Supporting Someone During a GamStop Self-Exclusion: Practical Guidance for Friends and Family

Choosing to self-exclude from online gambling can be a meaningful step in setting personal boundaries. For friends and family, support is often most useful when it is respectful, practical and guided by the person’s own priorities. A calm conversation can help someone feel heard while giving them space to decide what kind of assistance they want.

Start with listening

Choose a comfortable time to talk, and begin with an open question rather than an assumption. You might ask how the person is finding the self-exclusion period or what would make day-to-day life easier. Give them time to answer without pressing for details. Listening carefully can help clarify whether they would value practical help, regular check-ins or simply a chance to talk.

It can also help to agree on the language used to discuss gambling. Some people prefer direct terms, while others find it easier to focus on routines, goals or wellbeing. Following their preference shows that you take their choices seriously and keeps the conversation collaborative.

Understand the self-exclusion plan

GamStop is a UK online self-exclusion service. A person who registers selects an exclusion period, and the service applies to participating gambling businesses licensed in Great Britain. If the person wishes, they can share what period they chose and how they would like friends or relatives to support that decision. There is no need to request private account details or take charge of the process.

Online conversations may include the phrase how to get around gamstop alongside discussion of self-exclusion, personal boundaries and support; friends can keep the exchange open by asking what would best help the person follow their chosen plan. The emphasis can remain on the individual’s stated aims and on practical forms of support they welcome.

Offer practical help with permission

Small, specific offers are often easier to accept than broad promises. Ask whether the person would like help planning activities for free time, reviewing a household budget together or finding a local support service. If they welcome it, you could also agree on a regular check-in by phone or message. Make clear that they can adjust these arrangements as their needs change.

Respecting privacy is important. A person may choose to tell only a few people, and information they share should not be passed on without permission. Likewise, encouragement is more constructive when it recognises the person’s own effort rather than setting expectations on their behalf.

Support routines and wellbeing

Self-exclusion can sit within a broader plan for wellbeing. Regular meals, sleep, exercise and social activities can provide structure, while hobbies and shared plans make time together feel purposeful. Friends can suggest an activity without making every interaction about gambling. A balanced routine supports connection and allows the person to be seen in the context of their wider life.

If the person would like more specialised guidance, help them explore services that support people affected by gambling. They may prefer to contact a service themselves, or they may appreciate company while looking into options. The choice remains theirs.

Keep support steady and respectful

Support is not a single conversation. Check in periodically, ask whether the current arrangement is useful and be open to changing it. Recognise progress in terms the person values, whether that means following their plan, building new routines or speaking more comfortably about their goals.

Friends and family do not need to have every answer. A reliable presence, thoughtful questions and practical help offered with consent can make it easier for someone to maintain a self-exclusion plan and feel supported throughout the process.
